The thing about mobile apps is that they’re supposed to be … mobile. Portable. Easy to carry. Downloadable to devices that weigh ounces. But Samsung has supersized that concept by adding apps to a 361-pound French-door refrigerator (and a 302-pound side-by-side) noting that “unlike mobile devices, the refrigerator is stationary,” according to Appliance Magazine. Well, duh.

In a new ad, desperate housewife Vanessa Williams sings the praises of the refrigerator in lipstick so blazingly red that it’s difficult to concentrate on the eight-inch LCD screen. But we tried. So grab some ice cold water from the dispenser and gather round the fridge to see what it can do.

You gotta love it. The LCD screens will appear on a four-door French model for $3,500 and a side-by-side for $2,700. “Our strategy is to enable consumers to be more connected and organized through any screen, and we’ve accomplished that with tablets, laptops, smart phones and TVs,” said Samsung bigwig Tim Baxter. “Now, Samsung is extending that connectivity into the kitchen.”

At Consumer Reports we’ve tested lots of Samsung products and our current recommendations feature five Samsung refrigerators, seven LCD TVs, nine smart phones and the Galaxy tab. Still, when we’re cooking, we’d rather see something that keeps the family out of the kitchen.
