There are many things you can do to prepare your home for a storm. If you live in an area that is prone to bad weather you will want to weatherproof your entire house, including all the windows and doors. There are fancy storm windows which can be bought in just about any home improvement store but it is just as easy to make your own exterior storm windows. To do this you will only need to purchase some unbreakable glass, such as specialized storm glass or Plexiglas if you are looking for a less expensive option. Usually you can pick this up pretty cheap.

The next step in making your own exterior storm windows is to go around your whole house and measure each and every window. Make sure that you get accurate measurements as you are going to be buying wood which is cut specifically to the numbers you come up with. Once you have obtained all of your measurements then you will want to go and begin shopping for thick pieces of wood to build your frames with. You can also use metal brackets but this will cost more and be a much more complicated job.

You will need to have a full set of tools, including a drill, screwdrivers, wood saw and anything else which may be used in a project such as this. In addition, you will need to purchase good and heavy duty screws which are long enough and will hold up in even the worst storm. You may choose to install these storm windows just before a storm or at the start of storm season. The good news is that during hurricane season in tropical areas you can even leave the storm windows closed all year to better insulate your home from the heat.
