Where did the inspiration for your office space design come from?
Our office used to be a sewing factory in the heart of San Francisco. While it keeps the industrial loft ambiance of it’s origins with rough columns and a wall of windows, we’ve been striving to balance that with a high-tech feel both in furniture and decor. We have a plasma TV showing recent tweets @pariSoma perched on a huge stove from the 60s in our kitchen with a checkered linoleum floor. Everyone works on ping-pong tables in the space, creating a casual, fun feel alongside sleek technology and retro fixtures.
What is your favorite part/design of your office space and why? i.e. the arched window in the front office, etc.
pariSoma is a really changeable space. All of our furniture is modular and moveable, so the space can transform really easily from collaborative work space to event space to art gallery. None of the coworkers have a dedicated desk at pariSoma, so every day they make a new decision on where to sit and who to sit near. We love the dynamic environment that this creates as the coworkers experience a new desk neighbor or different view each day, leading to new interactions and ideas.
In terms of architectural elements in the space, we love all the natural light that we get. Our 2 big skylights and full wall of windows keep the space bright, even on the gloomiest of days. The recessed skylights also allowed us to hang our jet turbine that is a great highlight of the space. We’ve also got a fantastic bar island in the kitchen that is a tiled mosaic. It’s definitely a conversation piece and makes a great place for coworkers to sit when they’re tired of a traditional desk.
Do you feel that having a well designed and inspiring office has changed the way you and your employees work?
We completed a major renovation of the space right at the beginning of the year that has made a huge difference in the way that people work. The renovation took us from saturated, cool colors to a warm theme that has proven itself very welcoming and homey. We also constantly make an effort to improve the space as time goes on, so since the renovation we’ve added a hanging plane turbine in our skylight and astro-turfed our stage, to name a few changes. The art in the space is curated by Given Online and changes every 6-8 weeks as well. Every time that we make a change or hang new art, it revitalizes the space and gets coworkers excited about working here again.
pariSoma is truly a collaborative space for people to share ideas, and we think that this is in large part due to the dynamic design that we’ve cultivated.
Tell us about pariSoma and what it means to you to have a well-designed office space.
pariSoma is a coworking space, which means that we are really a shared office community. The people who work in the space do so on a membership basis, where they basically get full use of the facilities and are active in developing the future of the community. These members include freelancers, startups, independent workers, and more. Having a well-designed space allows them to really get their creative and innovative juices flowing. Not only do they get to work in this incredible space, but they also contribute to its future. Coworkers host events in the space as well as make suggestions and implement changes to the way things are done. The design of the space has already served to strengthen our growing community, and we believe it will continue to do that as we grow and adapt to new members.
