Granite tiles are usually made of leftover pieces of bigger granite blocks used for big projects. They are laid down and grouted much like ceramic tiles to make a granite counter top. Their installation costs are definitely cheaper than granite slabs. They can be done by yourself with proper care and methods. They are also lighter, hence the subfloors do not need to be heavily reinforced to support their weight.

Granite tiles are usually cut thinner than slabs which make them easier to treat and ship. They are also more versatile than granite slabs in that they can be fitted around complicated nooks and crannies. They also exude a traditional look. However, granite tiles have grout lines which can distract from the overall look of your granite counter top. These grout lines must be sealed separately from the tile and their color must match the granite. When the grout lines fade or darken, they have to be cleaned and resealed.

Granite slabs are fitted as one solid piece, giving a smooth and uninterrupted appearance. As they are a whole piece on their own, they allow for design customization. You can estimate where the streaks and veins will appear on your granite counter top and decide where to cut out the kitchen sink. Granite slabs can be polished, honed or flamed and finished on all edges. They are most suitable if you favor a contemporary look for your kitchen. Granite counter top made from slabs are easier to care as well because they have no grout lines.

However, granite slabs are generally heavier than granite tiles and proper care is needed during transportation and installation. Their installation is usually done by professionals because of their weight, which contributes to their high cost. Do take this into consideration before you undertake a DIY project.
