When you hear the term heat stroke, you often think of places like Florida, Alabama, Georgia or Texas. You may think that heat stroke is reserved only for places which are known for warm weather. However, heat stroke deaths occur all over the place and not only in tropical or warm areas of the world. A heat wave can strike almost anywhere and in places where people have not been acclimated to hot weather the results can be even worse. One of the largest contributing factors to heat stroke deaths is the absence of proper heating and cooling systems. For example, if you live in New York, you may not even have an air conditioning system in your home because the occasion to use it is rare. Perhaps you only use fans during the summertime and tough it out as it does not always get too terribly hot.

The problem with this is that when a heat wave does strike, not having a cooling unit can be the difference between life and death. This is especially true for the elderly who cannot get out of their homes or recognize a need to call for help in a timely manner. Unfortunately, there have been hundreds of horror stories over the past decade about older people who have been found dead in their apartments in inner cities due to heat stroke. If you have a family member who lives alone, you may want to consider helping them purchase and install a proper heating and cooling system so they will be prepared for any kind of weather. Even if there is a chance the system will only rarely be needed it is still a good cushion to fall back on in case an unusual weather circumstance should arise at some point in time.
