Furniture may anchor a room, but the typical sofa set isn’t usually the life of the party. Unless, that is, you happen to have a seat that is designed like a flashing disco ball or like a mood ring that changes colors.

Today’s interior design innovators are coming up with ways to incorporate light into modern furniture in brand news ways by using fiber optics and other technologies.  In the video above, you can check out a modern furniture set created several years ago by a group of students from Japan’s Mongoose Studio at Osaka University. They came up with concept furniture (Fuwapica Suite) that changes colors by reacting to weight sensors that cause the white surfaces to change pastel shades of yellow, pink and green. The surfaces also react to colors placed in contact with the surfaces.  Great conversation piece for the latest new hotclub – or your own living room.

While some furniture colors may change unexpectedly under different lighting, you can take the uncertainty out of that by making the changing lights the focal point of the furniture itself. A company called Fokas Fiber embeds sofas and chairs with fiber optics to create pinpricks of lights that change colors across the surface of the furniture like some psychedelic constellation. Which kind of makes you wonder what modern furniture would look like if Lady Gaga were at the design board.
